I have one surgeon who uses his nurse as an assistant surgeonl. There are no qualified
residents available at his site. Would this be AS-80 modifier. We have tried this I haven't
seen any payors reimburse. Is anyone billing for a nurse assistant?

Is the nurse an NP? We DO use NPs and PAs as surgical assistants. Yes, bill the AS modifier.

If you are in a teaching facility, your documentation must also specify that "There were no qualified residents available to assist, therefore NP Name assisted in the procedure. "
