One of the doctors in our group recently questioned our billing of the NP services in the hospital setting. (His wife is also a doctor and she told him we were doing our billing wrong.) Currently our NP will see the patient do the work up and then the doctor comes to see the patient later in the day to do the face-to-face and sign off on the NPs notes. This includes subsequent visits and consults. The NP does not admit or discharge. We bill under the doctor's NPI number when they have done the face-to-face. If the NP is the only person to see the patient then we bill the NP's NPI number. He is questioning if the NP can do consults? And what are the guidelines for NP dictation for physicians? Can a NP dictate for a MD if the NP did not see the patient? (I think he wants a NP to sit at this hospital and just dictate all day and he can just sign off on it). Please help. Thanks, Katy Matte, CPC
