The specialty Mental Health clinic I work for is starting a pilot program to fulfill Coordinated Care Organization requirements and we are trying to figure out how to code and bill for non physician's providing specific patient care.

For example we will be having certified medical assistants and Bacehelors level Qualified Mental Health Associates (or QMHA) working at the top of their licensure providing care over the phone to patients. These calls will cover questions regarding patient mood, medication tolerance, and Outcome Measure questionnaires are also given. These questionnaires provide scores for things like depression, anxiety, aggression , etc. In addition these professionals field questions and concerns from patients and parents forwarding those to the physician, order medications and handle any other patient needs.

Is anyone else using these types of health care professionals in this way and if so how are you coding and billing for these services? The closest codes we have found are Telephone services codes for non-physicians 98966-98968, but there are some restrictions that keep these codes from being the exact fit for the services we are providing.

We would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Thank you,

Lisle Smith, CPC
