I don't have any solid advice as I had the same issue! I started as a receptionist at a gastroenterology office, then went to a Skilled Nursing Facility as a Medical Records Director for 3 1/2 years since no one would hire me as a coder due to the "A" on my CPC. I only did ICD-10 coding while I was at the Skilled Nursing Facility. I applied for over a year at the University of Washington - Medicine with no luck. Out of the blue, I got an email in March 2023, from my now supervisor, at the University of Washington stating that I was qualified for a Coding Specialist 1 - Edits Coder. I have been working there since May 2023, and it has been amazing! Even though I have had my certification since September of 2017, it has been a long journey to finally get my foot in the door. My only advice is to be persistent in applying where you want to work. I had my heart set on working from home for the University of Washington for quite awhile, so I just kept applying until I heard back. I know that isn't amazing advice, but the only tip/trick I have! Good luck, and I hope you can get your foot in the door soon!
