I just wanted to get some views on this. Sometimes we see patients for the 1st time and its a sick visit not a physical. So we would bill sick new patient then when patient returns for an ROV next month he is no longer new so we bill established correct? I checked the CPT and it does not distinguish between ROV/SOV only timing. Thanks!

new versus established patient

You are correct. Once the patient is seen within your practice they are considered established. Type of visit does not matter.

Per CPT Guidelines

"A new patient is one who has not received any professional services from the physician/qualified health care professional or another physician/qualified health care professional of the exact same specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past three years. "
