If documentation does not support new patient consultation do we code as establish patient?

If it truely is a new pt. I would try to use a new patient code. Does the documentation support any new pt. code? (99201?) If it does, you would use that one. If not, then yes, you can use the est. patient codes.

I'm pretty sure that if the patient is new, then you need to use a new patient code. Do not be afraid to let your provider know that their documentation does not support billing even the lowest service....
