Hello everyone,

Our clinic has podiatric services. Occasionally we will do nail trimming. I know medicare will usually not pay for this service but we still want to have it documented in EHR

Questions:

who is authorized to perform this type of service?
Do they have to be under the supervision of a physician?

I have a feeling that only a nurse/ ma/ CNA would be allowed to do this with proper training.

I have not been able to find the answer to this anywhere.

Please help.

Thank you

Jose

What kinds of doctors can perform foot care?

Any health care provider may perform foot care, if the care is within the scope of his or her license, as defined by State law.

Does Medicare cover routine foot care?

In most cases, Medicare does not cover routine foot care, such as trimming nails or removing calluses. However, Medicare may cover routine foot care when:

The services would be unsafe if someone other than a doctor performs them because you have a serious medical condition affecting your whole body (such as diabetes).
There are signs of fungus in the nails, and you have pain, infection, or problems walking.
