Can V codes be used as primary for followup xrays for all carriers? Am I suppose to use the original code for the injury?? Please help.

For ICD-9 CM you never use the acute injury code for aftercare encounters. Always use the V cides and yes are can be primary for all carriers. For ICD-10 CM you are not to use the aftercare Z codes for aftercare of trauma or injury, you use the injury code and amend its status with the 7th character. This is all stated in the coding guidelines which are HIPAA mandated to be followed. The only payer that does not need to follow the coding guidelines is work comp.
