Wiki new to Anesthesia Billing for Orthopedic surgery

Good afternoon,

We are going to start using our pain mngt/ anesthesiologist for surgeries performed in a ASC. Typically we used the ASC anesthesiologist for these surgeries in the past. Since we will be now using our own Anesthesiologist we are not sure which code sets we should be utilizing for her anesthesiology services. Can someone kindly provide the code set we should be using and any additional guidance you can provide would be much appreciated.

Hi there,

You'll probably use a mix of codes from the anesthesia chapter and the nervous system surgery chapter of the CPT manual.

I highly recommend taking a few webinars on how to report anesthesia services because the coding/billing rules for anesthesia are unique and come with their own set of compliance risks.

If you're new to anesthesia coding/billing, you will need the ASA Crosswalk manual for accurate coding.
First you will code the surgeon's procedure(s), then you will look up the code(s) in the Crosswalk to determine the correct anesthesia code. As posted above, there are a lot of nuances to anesthesia coding that you need to learn. The links provided should help. Kelly Dennis is wonderful!

I'm on the opposite side, reimbursements. I have been searching the web to see how ASC's are reimbursed when submitting claims to Managed Care Plans for reimbursement. Seems like they are reimbursed annually but also have a supplemental program... I wish there was something more clear than my assumptions.
