Wiki National conference 2017

Sorry it's Vegas again. The Rio again as well I believe. I'd rather do it there than disney. I have not attended one yet but i've never been a fan of that hotel

That's very disappointing news. The AAPC must have really signed a long term contract with Caesar's Entertainment for us to have our conference locked in there for such a long time. They own the Rio, Paris, and Bally's.

Very disappointing to say the least. I've been to Vegas numerous times for business and fun. My employer pays for the conferences every other year. Since I went last year I am missing Orlando. Now I find out the conference is in Vegas AGAIN the year I'm eligible to attend.

Vegas

I'm not sure Vegas is correct for 2017 - not sure where you got your information? I believe Vegas will not be again until 2018, but I'm not 100% for sure on that.

If you do want to voice your opinion on conference locations, please contact your NAB member and give them your opinion. That is what we are here for. There is no conference committee, but in 2018 apply to join the NAB, as they give advice on conference locations.

I'm trying to find the link to the thread but someone had asked and Pam posted a link about 2017 being at the Rio and 2018 would be Orlando again.

After a painful internet search I found the info. It's listed in the 2016 exhibitor prospectus. Bottom of page 8

To give some insight, conference attendance tends to dip when we move away from Orlando or Las Vegas. The majority of our members enjoy those venues, so we continue to go back. We try to appease everyone but it's difficult to do with such a large membership.

Another consideration is finding a venue that will accommodate the crowd size we have. There have to be sufficient hotels, affordable air and transportation, etc. I'm sure AAPC would entertain other locations but it would then raise the cost of conference. It is unbelievable what the cost of even a simple can of soda or bottle of water costs for a conference.

In my own opinion, while the locations are fun, I go to conference for the learning experience and usually don't venture out (ok, the year it was in Hawaii-I definitely ventured out)!

Why don't y'all consider attending one of the Regional conferences instead of the National if you don't want to go to Las Vegas or Disney. There are two Regional conferences in 2016 one in CA I think in September and the other in New Jersey in October. It is on a smaller scale but still have the great educational sessions as the National Conference. It gives you a chance to network and you have the advance of a smaller group. I always find the Regional to give just as good information as the National conferences. Just a thought.

I too would rather have some new locations mixed in. I have heard that there was a long term contract signed, but I would hope that it has almost run its course. I have been going to the national conference since Hawaii! I go for not only the education, but the location. I know that we will never end up in Hawaii again, but there are many other venues that can handle the amount of people that attend. I have tried the regional, but when you go to the National events and sprinkle a regional event in...all I received was the exact same presentation as I was given in the National venue. Please consider working on new locations for National conference!

 Exactly! It could be in St. Louis and I'd be so much happier. Denver, Phoenix, Seattle, Memphis......

A few responses

A few quick points in response:

1. Members continue to want Las Vegas and Orlando: We regularly survey our membership about where to hold National Conference. Vegas and Orlando are ALWAYS far and away the TOP two locations. We've even modified the messaging to make it clear we were "just in Las Vegas" (or Orlando) "so where would you like the NEXT conference to be held" - Vegas and Orlando are still requested (by a wide margin over any other location). I suppose these results shouldn't be surprising as thesee are the top two locations for other industry events.

2. Regionals will hit other cites: This year we're in Atlantic City and Anaheim. We're also considering other top requested cities for 2017 and beyond (D.C., Seattle, Chicago (yes it still gets a substantial number of requests even though we've been there several times), New Orleans, San Diego, Hawaii, New York, Boston, Nashville, and Texas).

3. When we hold conference: Spring is always the most popular and Sunday through Wednesday continues to be the most popular set of days.

4. Contracts signed: We commit to several years in the future to secure dates and venues. Spring dates in Las Vegas and Orlando at good properties are gone years in advance.

5. Costs: Conferences of our size (roughly 3,000 attendees) are expensive to run. And the bigger the venue, the larger the cost per person. This is nothing like a local chapter seminar, workshop, or even a regional conference. As one simple example, a single boxed lunch (much cheaper than a catered meal) costs us around $50 per attendee. Add up all the meals and drinks and we're several hundreds of dollars in food costs alone.

Extremely Disappointed Las Vegas and Orlando

There is a contract to bounce back between Las Vegas and Orlando. ; (
I don't believe that AAPC knows and understands that not everyone is a gambler or have kids or grandkids.
Both these venues are not liked by me and alot of other people, I have asked other members myself.
AAPC needs to listen...your surveys make it a mandatory to all AAPC members when the pay their membership dues. Then AAPC will have the whole membership opinions and not just a few thousand if they answer your surveys.
There are not many old coders/members (I have been a member since 1997) that attend the National Conference anymore and they do not attend the regional conferences either.
Also, still feels like we are being herded like cattle. AAPC needs to figure out the flow better for classes.
The only reason that I attend the National Conference is because get getting 18 CEUS all at once otherwise I wouldn't be attending.
It costs us (New England) alot of money to travel, hotel and for the actual conference....not all of our rich and live paycheck to paycheck.
What about AAPC auditing members that used to come to the National Conference and ask them why they are not coming anymore??

I was actually hoping for Orlando next year because I will be there for the Star Wars Half Marathon. This year it happened that the two events took place the same week.

I agree with the "herding like cattle". I know it takes alot to put on a conference and by no means am I being negative...but maybe staggering sessions. I think the split lunches went great this year. When we are moving from session to session there are sooooo many of us that the restrooms have long lines to the point we dont go then get to the next session to be told by the moderator "please refrain from going in and out during the presentation as it is rude" I can agree but if you couldnt get to the restroom on break - what else do you do?

Other Locations

They should consider the Midwest areas Chicago, Dallas or St Louis would be nice for The National conference. Large Airports lots of big hotels and conferencing centers. Also its in the middle of the United States so easier travels from the east or west coast regions. Just my thoughts.
Haven't been to either a regional or national conference but hope to go some day.

sessions

If sessions were staggered, what happens if the session you are in gets done at 3:15 but the next session you want to get in already started at 2:45? You'll miss your CEU's if you leave early, and disrupt the session already in progress for 30 minutes if you attend late.

There is no feasible way to get 3000 people in and out of areas without it feeling like high school unfortunately. But hey, at least you don't have to stop at your locker to get your books :)

Yes, we do like to limit the number of people going in and out of the rooms because with as many as 600 people in the room, if the door opens and closes 200 times, wouldn't you get annoyed?

I'm with Brenda,
I'm there to learn and at least Vegas has some interesting food choices that are nearby. Their shuttle will take you over to the strip and within a couple of blocks there are restaurants owned by four Food Network stars. You don't have to gamble. Enjoy the lights, food and shopping!! The Rio was an OK hotel, but a lot more walking than at Bally's and Paris inside! I'll go no matter where they have it!!

National Conference

I understand the frustrations aired, but I am also in agreement with Brenda, Barbara, Lori and Bevan! The AAPC really does work hard to arrange these events and takes into consideration factors that many of us may not realize (like flight schedules, hotel distances, etc). I know because I, too, have asked why we haven't had a conference in this city or that city. And every time, the answer has been something I hadn't even thought of! I know some of you are frustrated, but also remember none of us can please everyone, all AAPC can do is try their best - which is why the survey, etc. I do love that there are suggestions on how to get additional data (like only surveying past conference attendees, etc) and love that we are trying to help find a solution!

I did want to add to Barbara's comments about Las Vegas with some other ideas of things to do. I'm also not a gambler, but (like Brenda) I don't go for the location. I go for the education, yes - but I go to network more than anything and to see what is new in the industry. However, I understand paying to go to a conference and wanting things to do in the evening after sessions. Las Vegas has soooo many options beyond just gambling. There are great restaurants, amazing shows, the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, helicopter tours, and so much more! And sometimes there is something for every budget. Several years ago when I went, my friends and I spent one evening checking out the different hotels and free shows (like the water show and volcano show, etc). There is really something for everyone and with a little extra planning it really can be a lot of fun!

I know AAPC is listening and monitors these forums (Bevan is proof!) and I just want to say a big thank you for all that they do and continue to do to make conference great for our attendees! I know they, too, would like to see some new venues but the timing, costs, etc will all have to be right.

I love that we all keep working together toward solutions and a common goal: A Fabulous Conference for All!!

Thanks to AAPC and all my fellow members for making this such a great organization!!

I agree with Chandra (thanks for the explanation)....

I would love to see a National or Regional conference in Washington, DC (thought I would slide that in) (LOL) :D

Vegas!

I understand the frustration too, but don't want to spend more of my hard earned money revisiting the same place over and over again. I don't gamble either or drink and have seen the sites Grand Cannon and many shows but its plain boredom at this point. I love conference and the networking but will spend my money on a regional and go 2 places instead of one time and time again.

Bevan your great at what you do, by far! There are some changes that do need to happen. I moved to Nashville in May for a great job and am moving to Mt. Juliet in Aug another struggling chapter is barely surviving as it is. May have to breathe some life in that!

Vegas

I've lived in Vegas my whole life. Give it a chance outside of the strip! You don't have to be a gambler or a drinker. There are so many amazing restaurants and fun places to go. Try going downtown during one of your spare nights instead of the hustle and bustle of the strip. There are a lot of great things to see and do in the Arts District in Downtown Vegas. I may be biased but I absolutely love this city, it is way more than just Las Vegas Blvd. ;)

I would like to put in a suggestion for the next conference although I don't really have any practical ideas about how to carry it out, maybe someone at AAPC will see this and come up with a brilliant idea. That's what I'm hoping for anyway. I am new to coding/billing and this years conference in Orlando was my first. I went for the classes and they were worthwhile but the main reason that I went was for the networking. I work in a very rural area and am the only coder/biller at an FQHC clinic. I hoped to meet other people doing similar work that I could bounce ideas off of but that didn't happen. Mostly this is because I tend to be a shy, reserved person and I find it hard to go up to people I don't know and just start talking to them. I think it would be a great idea to have some kind of ice-breaker at the beginning of the conference. Maybe people could break up into smaller groups related to what field they work in. Or maybe at one of the lunches tables could have signs like "oncology" or "opthamalogy"? I don't know, I just think it would be good to do something concrete to help encourage more networking.

I love the idea (if possible) of setting up tables with different specialties or set up sections in the dining area by by anatomical area! Orlando was my first conference and I loved it! With so many people it is difficult to find coders who work in the same areas, but it was a great place to meet other coders and network. The educational sessions were great! I do wish that the attendees would wait until the end of the sessions to present their questions, as several sessions were cut short due to questions presented during the middle and the presenter could not complete the class prior to the time we had to move on to the next class.....other than that I had an awesome time and kudos to the AAPC for doing this every year!

I don't mind that the conference is in Vegas this upcoming year, what bothers me is the room rates associated with the conference, (example, the one associated with regional conference in Anaheim, the room is 285 a night? who as a coder can afford this?) we have had a past regional conference in Long Beach and that was super nice, the event rooms were large, the space was great, rooms associated were a bit spendy, so, I stayed down the road and walked to the conference since parking is also costly!

The best part of Vegas is you don't have to pay to park! transportation is also fairly inexpensive! I love going for the networking opportunities as well. not a huge fan of the Rio but at least once you are in the conference portion the rooms are large and don't feel quite like cattle being herded through the lobby of the casino.

I just priced air/hotel combinations for Las Vegas, and the Rio is one of the more expensive hotels for that particular time period. Staying at the conference hotel is nice if your budget allows, but there are less expensive options available if you don't mind walking or taking a taxi. Vegas is warm in May, but it is not unbearable.

Rio is horrible hotel

Last conference - i entered my room to have the carpet full of stains as well as the furniture. Had to walk around with socks and shoes. Next morning, no hot water. What a catastrophe! Immediately checked out and went to another hotel - incurred extra costs for transportation, increase charges, etc. Either demand that rio up it's game or choose a different hotel!

Will there be some intermediate breakouts in the Risk Adjustment arena? Maybe CMS education department would be great since it is there rules. I have been to many a conference with AAPC and find mostly generalized or beginner coder information. Who reaches out for speakers and topics to be covered at the conferences? Since Risk Adjustment coding and HEDIS is beginning to work hand in hand maybe some sessions on this subject. I am sure I am not alone in this.

Thanks in advance for hearing my suggestions. Hope others agree.

Brenda, I agree with your statement. People that have not been involved with putting on a large conference seems to not realize that they have to pay for every single thing that is there.
all the drinks / food that people take extra of instead of what is needed, cost the AAPC. Yes, the conferences are a lot of money, but have the people complaining about it never thought about becoming an officer at their local chapter level? Cause if they did, they would see you get to go for half price, what a deal.

Brenda, I would have to say that the plane trip coming home was so long but going to Hawaii didn't seem long at all. It was really nice in Hawaii and I for one would go in a heart beat. It was wonderful, a dream come true. Plus I got a couple of dresses out of it too. Made new friends and thank God we still connect together.

Alternate Hotel options

I hope that there will be consideration to room blocks at other than the Rio. I would happily pay Uber $6 or a $10 cab ride to stay somewhere other than the Rio. Last conference, our experience was horrible--no hot water the entire stay, smoke pouring in our room from the suite next door, broken gym equipment, mediocre food and terrible shuttle service.

We were in Vegas last week (10/6) and booked tickets to see Rock of Ages which is held at the Rio. I travel extensively and don't spook easily but I was pretty anxious being at the Rio. It's thick with smoke. The casino was fairly deserted and while the waiter was attentive, he looked completely depressed to be working there. At one point, he jumped on a little stage and half hardheartedly performed a karaoke song. The entire scene screamed desperation. We grabbed a bite to eat at their sports bar and while the portion was huge, it was greasy. After the show (which was great), I witnessed a girl having some sort of reaction to what was presumably drugs in the bathroom--I offered to get help and her friend said she just needed to "come down" and would be fine.

I've attended several National conferences and have no problem with the Coronado Springs, either of the Gaylord's we've stayed at in Orlando and Nashville, the Paris/Bally's or any of the other venues. Hopefully, because the Rio is owned by Caeser's, there will be an option to stay at another property and commute to the conference.

Hi

Hi Julie,

I also plan to attend next May for my first Healthcon. I am already researching other hotel/casinos to stay at. I will not be staying at the Rio and have also heard about the thick smoke atmosphere which is a huge turn off for me. However, I plan to purchase a monorail pass and will do diligent research in booking a hotel/airfare combo. I, too, am hopeful that Caesar's or another hotel on he strip will have a Healthcon discount but I think I will have better luck just finding a good airfare/hotel combo. I follow other travels forums and do ask for advice from locals and how to make the most use of my time. :) I am planning to come a couple of days earlier to "do" Vegas as it's been several years since I have been there. I also use the myVEGAS slots app to rack up points to use towards meals, monorail pass and shows among other rewards if time permits, although I know my spare time will be spent on the strip and at the blackjack tables. ?

I would love to see a National or Regional conference in Washington, DC (thought I would slide that in) (LOL) :D

I agree with Chandra, those of us in the the DC/Maryland/Northern Virginia area would love to have one around here and there are lots of things to see/do as well as diverse places to eat.

I have heard and seen a lot of complaints about the Las Vegas conferences being held in places where there is a lot of smoke around. As an asthmatic, it would not be very safe for me to be in that environment. The one time that I have had the opportunity to attend a national conference was when it was scheduled for Nashville and it flooded that year so we were moved to Jacksonville FL last minute. I do have to say under the circumstances, the AAPC did a great job, but can't we give LV a break and maybe give Nashville another chance at national? I have to pay for my own bills to attend (which I'm sure many others do too now days) so mixing up locations for the benefit of other members or maybe since the membership has gotten so large provide several national conferences in addition to the regionals???

I hear you....I don't like the smoke either. I believe that for a conference of this size, AAPC books and contracts with conference venues years in advance of the actual date, so that they can secure sufficient space. So...although many of us have asked about having conferences at a variety of locations nationwide, AAPC may not be able to make changes until all of their obligations with current contracts have been met.

You mention Nashville.....we were there in 2014; although lovely, the moist environment underneath the glass dome caused many of us to have asthma attacks and other respiratory issues! At the Rio, the conference area is somewhat removed from the casino, so you only have to go out around and not through the casino, so it shouldn't be as bad as in 2015.

I do know that AAPC works hard to secure locations that will appeal to as many attendees as possible--choosing places that will accommodate 2500+ people, allowing for direct air travel, having after-conference activities, and allowing for reasonable room costs. It's not easy: Think about where you live--for me, it's outside Boston. So we can accommodate that number of people, there is a large international airport where you can secure a direct flight without multiple layovers, and there's lots to do after-hours. But you can't even rent a dumpster for under $300 a night, and we're limited to certain months because of the weather. (you don't want to be in Boston even in March). There aren't many locations that tick off all the items on the list. Plus a lot of attendees use this as a vacation, and bring family, so that's why both Vegas and Disney have been so popular. As for me, I could go to Disney every year and be a very happy camper. But I understand it's not for everyone.

I'm all in favor of multiple regional conferences; I'm just not sure the conference committee has the ability to do that.

Ever in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic?

I hear you Pam - I understand how it can be hard to have the multiple sites and about Boston costs (although I disagree about the March line - I went to a compliance boot camp in Boston March 2010 and it was just fine). While hotel room prices may be better in places like Las Vegas, the airfare can be a problem for many of us in here in the East. It is why I haven't attended a national - plus the fact I don't fly any longer for various reasons doesn't help that either. (Another plug for regionals - I went to Atlantic City and enjoyed it just as much)

On my wishlist would be a rotation - maybe West one year, Midwest the next, South the next, and then the Northeast - something like this. Gives everyone a chance and yes, costs in one location would be prohibitive to some others. But in your Boston scenario, people like me in the Northeast are used to those prices and might still consider it a bargain compared to the cost of the airfare. Sure, then the Western folks may not be able to come - but they will certainly do so when it comes around to their area again.

Just throwing in a suggestion - of course planning this takes a lot of work and I trust they do a great job , but if all areas of the country could be covered, it might help.

Thank you for listening
Lance

I agree with the above post. I do understand it is hard to find a place that will make everyone happy, but Nashville would be nice.....it is driving distance for me. I'm sure an adequate location could be found in Dallas or St. Louis as well. I don't fly any more because of health issues so something within driving distance would be awesome! I was scheduled to attend the conference in 2010 when it was in Nashville but....Mother Nature put a stop to that one! Hopefully, someone from the AAPC will read these comments and consider moving from Las Vegas or Florida in the future.

I have attended conference twice in Vegas, once in Orlando, once in Long Beach and once in Seattle. I was going to try to go when it was in Nashville but was not able to put together the funds at the time. I can get time off from my job to attend, but they do not reimburse for any of the costs to attend. I do not prefer Vegas but will be attending again this year since it is harder for me to come to the east coast and the airfare and hotel options are less expensive. I have done a map search and see that the Gold Coast is within sight of the RIO and is listed as a .3 mile walk. If the weather is bad or the environment does not feel safe I figure I can get an Uber or Lyft between locations. The Gold Coast is about $45 a night in case anyone is looking for another option! See you all in Vegas!

Rio Casino and Hotel for 2017 National Conference

I was surprised that we are having our National Conference at the Rio again. Have been twice and that was enough. I have read some reviews on this year after hearing from some close friends that it has gone down hill. No coffee in rooms any longer due to people stealing them, elevator and other electrical movements aren't working all the time.
It seems that the Rio is going down instead of up. I personally am not staying there due to the rate. So I am staying at another Casino and hotel close by and less expensive.
Since I am having to pay for my own way there, I am being careful about what I can spend and on what too.
I look forward to the Conference this year.

Hello, I am also staying the Gold Coast too. It will be nice to have coffee when I first get up. I thnk the price for going this year is outrageous as well. The conference is needed since we need CEU's, but it would be nice for the National committee to look elsewhere. We are getting tired of Las Vegas, NV. There are lots of other places that they can go.
