Wiki Multiple modifier 22's?

Hello there! Does anyone know if there is a scenario where it would be appropriate to either use a modifier 22 on multiple CPT codes for a surgery or use one on a CPT that is not the primary code?

Whenever I used 22 mod, I would only put it on the primary code and up the fee 20%.

I do spine coding and there are times that modifier -22 is legitimate on different levels on more than one CPT. I had this same question a couple of months ago and asked the Ortho forum board on DecisionHealth. No one was able to come up with any "official" ruling saying -22 can only go on one code. If you have the documentation to back it up as being "above & beyond" then it can be done. Then watch it closely to see if the carrier reimburses correctly.
