Hello,

I work in an Ortho practice in which each doctor has a different sub specialty and taxonomy code. One of the physicians (who has the sub-specialty of trauma) saw a patient in which he diagnosed her with a "Closed displaced fx of head of right radius". He referred the patient to his partner who has the sub-specialty of hand surgery. This physician has decided to perform surgery on the patient (radial head open reduction internal fixation). Since the first physician billed for the fracture but the second physician is going to perform surgery am I to send a corrected claim with just the E/M and x-rays for the first physician and allow the second physician to start the global period since he will do the surgery? Or does the fact that they have different sub specialties and taxonomy codes and that the first physician's diagnosis of the fracture allow him to bill for it?

I know this is rather confusing so I hope I explained it somewhat ok.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Did the first provider treat it at all, or just diagnose it? If they only diagnosed the issue and the intent was to have the hand specialist take over treatment, I would only bill the E/M and x-rays for the first provider and then fracture care for the hand specialist.
