Hello,
In the February edition Proper Use of Modifiers 59, XE, XP, XS & XU booklet , from the CMS website, they are recommending on when it is Appropriate & Inappropriate use the 59 or XU , it is very confusing to me as they write we may or may want to use XU to replace it sometimes with the 59 . So I was hoping to get some clarity.
We are a genetic lab that run tests on proband and its comparators. -The comparators codes are the one in question. i.e
I bill 0214ux1 and 0215u x2, so the 2nd 0215U code is the code that typically gets the modifier. I would normally use the 59 which seems to be the most appropriate,
Anyone can help with an advice? Trying to figure out if I need to start using the XU instead of the 59.
I am attaching the release for reference. (page 4 specifically "Modifiers XE, XP, XS, and XU are valid modifiers. These modifiers give greater reporting specificity in situations where you used modifier 59 previously. Use these modifiers instead of modifier 59 whenever possible. Only use modifier 59 if no other more specific modifier is appropriate.")
Thank you,
