Can modifier -25 be used with consultation codes such as 99243? Yes, but I have a question. Are you actually billing a "Consultation"? Just because one doc directs a patient to go see another doc does not make a consultation. A true "Consultation" is actually not performed frequently and CMS has not paid for any consultation codes for years. About 60% of private insurance has followed CMS and does not pay for consultations any more either. So my question to you is, are you billing an actual consultation to an insurance that will actually still pay a consultation code?
