Wiki Modifier GW on Inpatient claims

Can modifier GW be used on an inpatient claim? If not how do we let the insurance company know the admission is not related to the hospice diagnosis?

GW is for NON terminal illness diagnosis. If they are hospitalized due to Hospice related diagnosis and the Provider is not employed by Hospice I would use GV modifier. See the Internet Only Manual Publication 100-4 Chapter 11 section 40. Hope this helps

I understand that GW if sor NON terminal illness diagnosis. The pt was admitted for Pneumonia, this is not related to his hospice dx however, we were told that GW can NOT be used on a UB claim for this is what I am questioning. Can FACILITIES utilize GW on a UB claim??

We do not put it on the facility. It would go on the provider charge only. We are CAH and this is how we do it.
