One of our practices has begun to refer some of our patients for genetic counseling. We have been billing a regular office visit. Myriad (who is the company for genetic testing) is telling us that we are able to add the -33 modifier to the E&M code and it will be reimbursed at a higher level since it is preventive.

When the patient first comes to us for an E&M visit, it is not for genetic counseling. But after the patient has had the test done, they are then scheduled with us later for an office visit regarding the results. It appears that that is when the 33 modifier can be used.

Do you agree or disagree? Do you have any experience in billing for genetic counseling?

thank you!
