could someone PLEASE explain when to use mod 57 and when to for an orthopedic. I am new to coding orthopedics and the Dr did an E/M 99202 w/mod 57, on a pt who has a tibia shaft fracture 27750, he also did an xray 73600. Dr applied a short leg cast.

57 modifier is applied to an E/M code when billed the day of or the day before any 90 day global procedure.

You would look up your procedure and if its a 0-10 day global procedure your modifier is a -25 if its a 90 day global then your modifier is a 57.
