So I work in the Mental Health field where we have a psychiatrist, who has been out for the past 2 weeks due to illness. My office manager is trying to get a Locum to come in and fill in until the psychiatrist comes back, and to be here for a couple weeks after she comes back.

From the research I have done, you can not have a Locum while the main physician is present and seeing clients. Is this right? Also, when billing from what I understand Q6 would be the modifier we would use for the Locum, but my manager is under the impression that we can not bill modifier Q6 in Richmond, VA???

I'm still new to coding and would love any and all insight. Thanks

you are correct Locums can not be used once the provider returns to work, and can only be used upto 60 days from his start date. I can not see how your state can not allow the Q6 modifier if CMS requires it on the claims. Maybe have your office manager provide for you documentation reflecting where they received their locums information.
