Partial glossectomy is less than half of tongue?
Hemiglossectomy is one half of tongue? Along lateral lines, or one-sided? Or more than one half of tongue?
So what is the essential difference between partial and hemi?

I believe you answered your own question with that first statement: partial=<half; hemi=half.

Extending to what you and fwnewbie said, a hemiglossectomy is excision of the diseased lateral half of the tongue.

A partial glossectomy "The provider removes part of the patient's tongue" with no indication as to whether it is the lateral tongue. And it would usually be less than half of the tongue.
