I am pretty new to billing for behavioral health. MY LCSW seen a patient twice with his wife but now only the wife comes the husband hasn't been back and the provider says she can still see the wife under the husbands name. Is this correct? Please help any resources or knowledge will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Tara M.
 
Hi Tara, you can google "APA 2013 CPT" codes and there is a pdf that shows all the codes. The therapist is correct, she can bill 90846 " Family psychotherapy without the patient present" under the husbands name if the primary purpose of the meeting if for treatment of the patient. If she is treating the spouse for something other than issues relating to the patient then it would not be allowed.

I would also suggest you invest in Optum Behavioral Health Coding and Payment Guide which can be very helpful.
