We have always been told that an LAVH includes detaching some structures laparoscopically and the remainder vaginally. We have just been given information that as long as the cervix is closed vaginally no other work needs to be done and it qualifies as an LAVH. Is this correct? Help please as this is causing a lot of tension among our coders.

Thank you!

For an LAVH, only the top attachments are severed via the laparoscope and the uterus is always removed via the vagina. For a TLH, the attachments are severed via the scope and the uterus is removed via the scope or vaginally.
Hope this helps.

I knew that, but we were always told that the lower attachments needed to be severed vaginally for the LAVH, but now we are being told that as long as the vaginal cuff is sewn vaginally, that's all the work that needs to be done, no other work is needed. Do you know if that's true?

Thank you!
