For how long after a joint replacement is it appropriate to report the aftercare code Z47.1?

(ie. patient had a right knee replacement done 5 years ago and comes to the office to have that knee checked and xrays taken, they have no complaints/problems.)

Thanks for your input!

According to your documentation, the patient was seen for knee assessment and the doctor looked at it. Z47.1 is still an ok code. Just add Z96.65_ plus anything else that comes up. I'm not sure there is an expiration date for aftercare especially since the implant is still in there.

Peace

Z09 may be more appropriate since treatment has been completed. There were no new problems and no treatment performed.

I agree that Z09 is more appropriate for a simple followup followed by the Z96 .65- code for the replacement status.
aftercare codes are for when you are still managing some part of the procedural event such as wound checks and follow up is checking to be sure there are no problems but the condition is no longer being treated.

We also use Z09 after treatment has been completed. Our providers want us to use Z09 starting with their one year follow up.
