Hello everyone :) this is my first time posting on the Forum so I am excited to see the response/feedback!
My question: I currently work for a hand surgeon and a dermatologist who both administer Kenalog injections. Our hand surgeon uses Kenalog 40 and we code 2 units for .5cc injections. Our dermatologist uses Kenalog 10 and we only code one unit for .5cc injections. Since J3301 is the code for either Kenalog 10 or Kenalog 40, should we be coding 2 units across the board for .5cc injections or is there a difference in the Kenalog 10 that supports only using one unit rather than two?
Thank you in advance to all who may respond!

  • J3301 is defined as a dose of 10mg.
  • 1 cc of Kenalog 40 = 40mg.
  • 1 cc of Kenalog 10 = 10mg.

Kenalog 40 = If you are giving .5 cc that would equal 20mg. If J3301 is 10mg then you would bill 2 units to equal the 20mg administered.
Kenalog 10 = If you are giving .5 cc that would equal 5mg. If J3301 is 10mg then you would bill 1 unit to allow for the 5mg administered.

Let me know if this does not make sense. It can get a little confusing if you are not use to it.
