Hi everyone! I recently spoke with an OBGYN office about an open position at their clinic, but wasn't sure if it'd be an approved job to help me drop my apprentice from my CPC-A certification. The position is for a surgery scheduler. I was told I'd mainly be talking with patients and insurance companies; however, the person I spoke with did say I'd be talking to their coders if an insurance company needed a different code, but I wouldn't technically be the person coding the surgeries. Would this position be an approved job to help me drop the A? (To me it didn't sound like it would be approved, but I wanted to ask and see what others thought.)

Look at the AAPC template letter for apprentice removal. It's not about the job title. It's about the responsibilities you perform. If you will be using coding tools to determine CPT and/or ICD10, then definitely yes. If you will simply talk to a coder who will give you the info, then no. You will still be using CPT and ICD10 and if you are being proactive and discussing coding, your employer may be willing to state this in your letter and AAPC will make the final determination.
My personal opinion is that even if the job will not meet the requirements to remove the A, it is fantastic medical office experience. You use an EMR. You interact with patients, clinicians and payors. You see the impact that one incorrect digit makes. You become familiar with medical terminology and abbreviations. You get to discuss cases with coders and/or billers. If you demonstrate your skills to your employer, they may be willing to expand or move you to another role when available.
I think there are hundreds of CPC-As who would kill for a surgical scheduler position.
Good luck!
