Hello,

I just started at a practice recently and they have a huge amount of insurance credits because previous employees never refunded them. I am going through them and rectifying and notifying the insurance carriers/refunding only the recent ones before I dive into the older ones.

Does anyone know if there is a time limit on the ones I can refund? Or guide me to where I can find this information? The practice is in New York State.

Thank you!

Typically they want them refunded within 30-days. However, I would say that a year would be a reasonable time to go back to for trying to refund.

Having done only credit balance audits for a large national provider, be sure that the entire patient account is audited to ensure the credits are really legitimate insurance over payments, and not over adjustments or patient credits. I would run a report to find the largest credit balances and work those up first.
