I have an order for 3 mg heparin to be given subcutaneously every 8 hours. The first injection was at 1412. The next was given at 2100. Can I charge for the second injection? There is only 7 hours between the administrations. I am unable to find anything in writing that instructs what to do in this situation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

The guidelines including timing is written before the codes in the cpt book. Depending on if its an infusion or subcutaneous injection determines the timing between each injection. Its hard to just point out a time without seeing all your drugs being coded. Read over those guidelines before and make sure you understand your hierarchy of infusions and injections. Hope this helps. AAPC recently had a webinar on demand about injections and infusion coding. This can give you some more insight. Also AHIMA has a few articles on it as well.
