If a physician is NOT the admitting physician but is called in to see the patient (we used to bill Consult codes to Medicare), would you code it as 99221-99223 or something else?

If they ARE the admitting physician, is there a modifier to be used with 99221-99223?

I've been seeing confusing information on this.

Thank you!
Lora

Yes, since Medicare no longer covers inpatient or outpatient consults, both physicians would bill an initial inpatient evaluation and management service 99221-99223. The admitting physician would append modifier -AI, the other(s) would not append a modifier.
