I am starting to code encounters for patients with sickle cell disease. When they are in crisis we, of course, give medications. We hang an IV bag of saline and then push different drugs into the IV line. I know we cannot bill hydration codes because the patient is not dehydrated, vomiting, etc. The patient may receive 2 mg of morphine each hour until the pain has subsided. Is this considered IV push or therapeutic infusion?

Saline over 31 minutes is a IV hydration and the morphine are IV pushes. But the pushes have to be 31 minutes apart if they are the same med (morphine). If there are different meds given via IV push you would capture them as well. If two IV pushes are given at the same time you can only capture one charge.
