Can an independent nurse practitioner fill in for an independent provider and not be employed by them? I was asking because another CPC told me that the only way a nurse practitioner could work while the provider was out of town was if they were employed by the provider.

Can someone provide me with documentation?

Thank you!

your friend is correct. A NP cannot operate/see patients independently without the supervision or a MD or DO.

An NP can work without direct supervision, but they are in a collaborative agreement with a physician that must follow the particular rules in that state for supervision. Such as review of so many charts per month. But the NP can have their own practice without the MD being o site. However an NP cannot be a locum for a different provider as they are in this collaborative agreement with their provider.
