We are a multi-specialty office that also has x-ray onsite. My question is...Patient comes in for FDG PET scan...they give the dye...patient starts having a severe reaction and is sent to the ER immediately...How/Can we bill for this? Do we simply bill for the dye that was given? Or can we bill the PET scan as well with a 52 modifier attached? Any help is greatly appreciated

MedLearn states if the radiopharmaceutical is administered and no imaging was performed, choose the lowest level CPT code in the intended section of CPT and bill with -52 or -53 modifier. If you have administered a radiopharmaceutical, you have begun the study - administration is an integral part of the NM procedure code.
