Good afternoon all,

I have a question about a BRAVO the capsule disengaged from the esophagus after approximately one hour. Study can not be properly interpreted to to lack of data since the study was incomplete should I bill with modifer 52 or 53?

TH:confused:

I would use a 53, since by definition a 52 modifier reports a reduced service without disturbing the base service. Your example states the study couldn't be properly interpreted. For example: If the patient had a capsule endoscopy for suspected tumor of the SB, and the capsule reaches the point of concern, but doesn't reach the ileum, we would append modifier 52 to indicate the service was reduced (compared to the code definition), but the service provided was sufficient for diagnosis. Had the capsule never left the stomach, or never reached the jejunum, we would need to append modifer 53.
