Hi all,

Little confused with the excludes note in ICD 9 CM, can anyone please clarify...

V12.51 excludes V12.55, how it should be coded?

Thanks,
Thara L CPC-H

Well V12.51 excludes PULMONARY EMBOLISM because V12.55 is the code to use for that condition. V12.51 is for venous THROMBOSIS AND EMBOLISM.

Also the use of any of the V12.5 codes exclude V13.81, 412, and 411.0.

The ICD-9 excludes notes are very confusing, sometimes it means you cannot code the two codes together and other times you can. For instance if you are indicating the same event then you cannot code them together however if the PE is a totally different event and location than the thrombosis and embolism then you can code them together. ICD-10 CM will be much more clear on this.

Yes, I much prefer the Excludes 1 and 2 notation better.

I'm reading my ICD-10-CM 2014 Draft and it has an Excludes 2 note which allows the two to be coded together.

FYI Excludes 1 is ABSOLUTELY don't code this with the code you're looking at.
Excludes 2 is not part of the condition represented by the code. So you can have these.
