ON A DX OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY E11.39 DO YOU HAVE TO USE ANOTHER DX CODE AS A PRIMARY FROM E10.???/SO DO YOU STILL NEED TO USE 2 CODES FOR DIABETIC RETIONPATHY. THANKS MARY:confused:

Type 2 diabetes is coded with codes from the E11 category and type 1 is coded from the E10 category you will never have E11 codes with E10 codes on the same patient. You will not use E11.39 for diabetic retinopathy, you will use E11.31-, E11.32-, E11.33-, E11.34- and so on if it is a type 2 patient. And no you will not use an H code for the retinopathy. You will use the E11.39 if the documentation indicates type 2 with any other ophthalmic manifestation not already addressed in the E11.3 category and then you will add the H code for that condition. The same for if the payient is type one, just change the above to have E10 as the category.
