We are going around and around with this. When to use F17.200 nicotine dependence vs Z72.0 tobacco use. I am unable to find what documentation distinguishes when to use what. I'd appreciate any help on this.

IMO, nicotine dependence is a physical craving and cannot go a single day without. Tobacco use indicates person uses but not dependent. An example, only smokes when drinking alcohol at a party or social gathering.

Coding in South Carolina

From what I've been told, you can not use F17.200 Nicotine Dependence unless its stated in the chart. We have to use Z72.0 tobacco use for cigs, of snuff. Unless the Provider states that they are nicotine Dependent.
