Hello,

I'm working a superbill where a "Hypertensive Heart & CKD" Dx code was chosen by the physician. I've never really worked these particular codes before and would just like some clarification. The Dx code selected is 404.10. The patient has stage 3 CKD (Dx code 585.3) & HTN vasculopathy. Is the code chosen correct? Would you use this type of code if the patient has any particular type of heart condition, or something more along the lines of CHF? Any help is appreciated, thank you! :)

D.S.

1) 404.10 (this assumes the HTN is benign)

2) whatever the code is for the specific vasculopathy - something in the 440-449 range, maybe???

3) 585.3 for the CKD Stage III

My understanding is that you do NOT need to have a specific type of heart problem (such as CHF) to use the 404.10. Also, I recommend you check to see what type of hypertension that patient has - it will affect your primary code
