Has anyone been informed of a "law" requring coders to use the V-code for high risk sexual behavior for any HPV screenings, regardless of whether that diagnosis is provided by the physician? This is news to me as a certified coder; we have ancillary coders at our facility who are actually doing this. I find nothing to support breaking the cardinal rule of coding.

I have not read this at all! However a coder may not code anything not documented. Not everyone that gets anHPV screening is the one engaging in high risk behavior. You cannot assign a dx code to a patient indicating something not documented. This code can cause an increase in the patient risk which can have an effect on the premiums
