Hi everyone, can someone shed some light on this question for me:
HPI: Can you use the word ( today ) as duration?
example: Mr. Nobody is a very pleasant male who comes in today accompanied by his wife.

No, that would not be correct. Duration would be used for how long the patient has had the presenting problem. Example: Mr. Nobody states he has had labored breathing for 2 days. 2 days would be the duration of his problem.

No it would not be appropriate. Remember, HPI is history of present illness. Today doesn't describe the present illness, unless it happened "today".

Your statement dosent have a chief compliant or a presenting problem so obviously you cannot use today as duration.

The only way that "today" could be counted is if the accident happened today or if the symptoms began today, not just the wife comes in today with the husband.

I agree with Evelyn, you could technically use "today" but it would have to be related to the cc, as in "patient presents with RUE pain s/p falling off a ladder today". Make sense?
