is there a way to code an injection during a global period? My understanding is the injection is not coded due to it is part of pain management under the global period. Injection is for same shoulder that surgery was done one.

Thank you,
LLR

There is not enough information to answer your question unless the patient is on Medicare which does not allow any procedure during the post-op unless the patient returns to the OR.

If the patient is having increased pain and inflammation in their shoulder and an injection of steroids is given as a therapy. Try appending modifier 58 to your injection code.

A 58 modifier would be incorrect coding. An injection for management of post-operative pain would not meet the definition of a staged procedure under CMS guidelines.

Correct under CMS guidelines, however each commercial payer has their own guidelines and some do allow the injection to be billed with a 58 modifier. I would advise to check with your payers.
