Wiki Hospital based NP versus private practice MD

I have a group I work with that is on call for trauma and ER. For trauma patients they follow up in a trauma clinic at the hospital where the hospital based NPs see them and then the MD's from the private practice also see the patient. From what I can tell the NP cannot charge separetly as it is included to the hospital global pay. Can the MD's bill for seeing the patient for follow up (no surgery done)?

Separate specialty and practice?

If the private practice MDs are NOT in the same practice or are of a different specialty that the MD who provided the ER services, then you may code what that MD documented for the follow-up clinic visit. It sounds like your POS will be 22 (outpatient hospital). You may NOT use any of the hospital-employed NPs documentation, however, other than ROS and PFSH.
