I am new to anesthesia billing and I've been told by a CRNA that there are "modifiers" that we can use to distinguish that a patient is high-risk. For instance, the patient has a high BMI or has a certain medical condition that requires extra work. Is this true?

There are the physical status modifiers, yes, though not everyone will reimburse extra for those. Also there are the qualifying circumstances add-on codes that describe extreme young or old age, controlled hypothermia, and anesthesia under emergency circumstances, however these are not all reimbursed by all payors either. I would look into who you're billing and find out which if any of these codes and mods they pay before trying to bill for them. Hope I could help!
