What does "confirm if active" mean in terms of hepatitis C coding? Am I to code as hepatitis C or as carrier? Screening test was done by different provider/department. Now patient presents to PCP for followup. Highlights from note as below:
Assessment: Hep C. New (for us) diagnosis. Needs workup for hepatitis C screening positive. Confirm if active. Get basic workup (hep A, B immunity), abdominal ultrasound. Will confirm active first. If active, will get genotype and continue workup for possible treatment.
I am able to view a lab result for HCV that states "reactive." This is the previous lab that was done, so it appears to be confirmation of hepatitis C, doesn't it? Again, I'm not sure what doctor means by "confirm if active" and how that impacts code choice. I've done some research and not finding an answer to my question.
Thanks in advance for your help!
