Per the General Surgery Coder's Pink sheet from 9/07 it states that both the size and number of the hemorrhoids are a factor in determining if it is simple or complex. It states that the decision should be made by the surgeon. It also states that both number and size of the hemorrhoids must be documented to support the use of the complex code.
