The code for hemachromatosis prior to 10/1/2010 was just 275.0, now it calls for a 5th digit. What 5th digit would you choose if the physician doesn't mention the type of hemachromatosis since there are 4 options? Would you code them as 275.01 hereditary hemachromatosis?

Hi,
I think you are correct, Hemachromatosis- 275.01(Primary idiopathic), but the code 275.03 says secondary and aquried? so 275.01 is correct.

Yes, Primary/ hereditary is the most common type. ; but if there is any conditions
anemia, alcoholism, and other disorders, documented in the history as preexisting condition, prior to the occurrence of Hemochromatosis, the secondary should be pondered before assigning primary or idiopathic code. In such case, best is to clarify with the provider.
