Is it compliant to allow registration staff to use an Icd 9 book or encoder or google to look up diagnosis???? Please help, I have an interim manager whom I am trying to explain that it is not compliant and puts us at high risk for misdiagnosing patients. This is why there are coders to make sure codes are going out properly.

Does anyone have any documentation regarding this??

If they are choosing the correct codes and the providers documentation supports them then it doesn't matter how they got the codes, as long as they are correct and to the highest specificity supported by the documentation.
