Wondering if should use modifier 52 (ASC) , pt came in for hardware removal, physician was able to remove 2/3 of the screw when broke and the remainder imbedded, physican chose to leave the remainder of the scre due to felt would require extensive destruction elected to leave the rest of the screw in should I bill 20860-52?

Mary,
Thanks for the reply just needed to be sure, also I guess Im dyslexic today as I see where I have transposed my code should be : 20680

Thanks again
Paula

No modifier?

Then again ... the physician DID remove hardware ... just not all of it. Isn't what the physician did still coded as 20680? (Sort of like performing an LP but not getting any fluid ...)

Just thinking out loud.

yes he did remove some, but because he didnt completely remove the intended screw because it broke and he had to leave 1/3 of it in the patient, you would need to report the reduced service because it was not a complete removal of hardware. If he removes all of one screw and only part of another then you would be able to capture the entire component.
