I have an operative report stating a forearm fracture is "type III" not specifying A, B, or C - how do I code the initial encounter for this?
ICD-10 gives us two choices:
B = Initial encounter for open fracture type I or II
Initial encounter for open fracture NOS
C = Initial encounter for open fracture type IIIA, IIIB, or IIIC
So does "Type III" just become NOS and get coded as B for the 7th character? If so why don't they just describe B as initial encounter for open fracture type I, II, III, or NOS?
