I am going to be billing for a new birth center which is a facility. Do you know if billing this type of facility would be an institutional or professional billing? Where would I find the answer? Thank you!
Facility fees are usually billed on a UB-04 institutional form, but since you are not a traditional type of facility (i.e. hospital, SNF, ASC), I would recommend you start by contacting the payers to whom you expect to be submitting claims, and by reviewing the policies on their web sites. Unlike professional coding, facility billing is more dependent on payer policies, and you'll need to understand how and whether your individual payers are going to credential and contract your facility and what they're expectations are for how you should bill in order to ensure that you don't have a lot of disruptions in your revenue.
