If a pt had an injury, but we are billing out a pain code, as we need to obtain an MRI before giving a definitive dx, do we bill out the external cause codes on that first visit, or wait until we have an injury dx to bill out with the external cause codes? Thank you

is the pain a late effect of the injury or is the pain a symptom due to an external cause?

Then use the pain code, the G89 along with M code for the site of the pain along with the external cause with an A
