Is the billing company responsible for answering patient questions and following up on denied claims after the contract between the provider and billing company has ended? To me it would seem like grounds for a HIPAA violation if we are calling insurance companies regarding claims after our contract ended with that provider. The DOS was during our contract but we are still getting calls from patients but there's not much we can do as our PM software account is closed and we can't access any patient info or claim info.

Your contract may have ended in terms of providing billing services on a go-foward basis, but you may be responsible for working down the AR for the dates of service when you were contracted. That should be spelled out in the contract. Isn't this a question for your employer?

It doesn't address this matter in the contract. It just says that we'll provide full-service billing during the contracted dates.
