I completed an 80-hour AAPC online course & obtained my CPC-A in July 2023. I’ve been employed as an Inpatient Medical Coder at a local hospital for almost a year, in which I utilize ICD-10-CM / PCS code sets (not CPT) & currently preparing to have my apprentice status removed.

The AAPC website lists different ways to remove the apprentice status. One of the options include Employer(s) verification of at least 1-year on-the-job experience using the CPT, ICD-10-CM, OR HCPCS Level II code sets.

The template provided by AAPC that my employer has to fill out is worded differently “has shown extensive knowledge in utilizing and maneuvering through the ICD-10-CM, CPT, AND HCPCS coding books, which are required on a daily basis.”

Can I remove my apprenticeship if I only use ICD-10-CM & PCS code set? (not CPT or HCPCS code sets) --- I want to be sure before I send the form to my employer to complete.

That's a great question. As a CPC, you're certified in the use of CPT, but your one-year experience involves inpatient coding where CPT is not used; in my opinion more difficult, but experience just the same.
Let me toss this out to some of my colleagues at AAPC and see if I can get an answer for you. Perhaps your supervisor can address that your experience with ICD-10-CM and PCS shows that you're no longer an apprentice in the work that you do and that would be sufficient for AAPC. Sit tight...I'll be back.

I have been out of medical coding for a while and have my medical coding certification as an apprentice. Right now, I am a medical receptionist for an urgent care but would love to get back into medical coding part time. Any suggestions on what I can do? Plus, any suggestions on how I can retrigger some knowledge like classes on any new/old medical coding information. Thank you.
